New Theatre
For entertainment ranging from Oklahoma to Calendar Girls, book into the New Theatre, a stately old venue that was actually new in 1906. It also stages the city’s annual pantomime, along with old favourites such as Buddy, the Rocky Horror Show, and The Producers.
The theatre was built from brick and Bath Stone and opened to the general public on 10 December 1906. The first public performance was of William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. The artists that have been on stage at the New Theatre have included Laurel and Hardy, Tom Jones, Shirley Bassey, Sarah Bernhardt, Anna Pavlova and Tommy Cooper. Harold Pinter’s play The Homecoming had its world première here on 26 March 1965.
